Globus is a service for transferring large data files around campus or around the world. It will monitor the transfer for you, restarting it should something go wrong. You can even put an endpoint on your desktop (see globus.org for more information about that).
Create a Globus Account
- Go to www.globus.org
- Click “Log in” in the upper right
- In the “Look up your organization” box type “alabama”
- Select “University of Alabama, The” and continue
- Login with your UA credentials at the UA login screen
- Follow the instructions to link accounts or continue on and allow access at Globus
Transfer a file
- In globus.org select “Manage Data” and then “Transfer files”
- Click in the “endpoint” field in the left-side panel.
- Type “bamaglobus” and select your endpoint from the list that will appear
- Click in the “endpoint” field in the right-side panel
- Choose your other endpoint, either from bamaglobus or a site off-campus
- Set the path to the correct one for each endpoint (find your file)
- Select the file to be moved
- Select the arrow at the top showing which way the file will go and the transfer will begin. You will receive an email when it is finished. You can also come back to this page to review the progress.
Advanced usage
There are transfer options that let you move only the files that are new or total synchronize two directories, letting it delete files that don’t exist in the source directory. There is also a command-line interface into Globus so you don’t have to return to the web interface to start or monitor transfers. You can ssh directly to the bamaglobus nodes and initiate a transfer. You cannot do this from the master node. Please see https://docs.globus.org/cli/ for more information.
